Autobahn Accident Involving the Mercedes-Benz ML Prototype: One Dead, One Severely Injured

by Mercedes in the News on May 3, 2010

Pittsburgh Mercedes-Benz can attest to the fact that the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML prototype has slowly begun creating a lot of buzz around the automotive world with its recently captured video footage and pictures. Unfortunately, the latest news involving the ML-Class SUV comes on a tragic note.

A few days ago, reports came out stating that the 2012 prototype has been involved in a fatal car crash last week, killing one and severely injuring the Daimler test driver.

Moments before the horrific accident occurred, there was an unrelated incident when a 26-year-old driver was experiencing some car issues, collided with a guard rail, and came to rest in the fast lane; sideways. With no posted speed limit on that part of the Autobahn, coming to a stop in the left lane can be deadly, and sadly, this time it was.

Unaware of the accident ahead, the SUV continued forward, crashing into the sideways vehicle – a small Mazda – just as the driver was stepping out of his car. The Mercedes-Benz flipped, rolled, and came to a rest upside down. The Mazda driver died instantly, while the driver of the prototype was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

“Test pilots are professional drivers. You must not behave like Rambos, but must still drive as good as any other and respect the traffic regulations. German roads are not the Nürburgring! I appeal to the auto companies to adopt a test driver for a specific code of conduct with strict rules,” said German Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer.

According to Salisbury Used Cars, the incident took place where Mercedes-Benz and Porsche prototypes are usually tested, on A81 which connects Singen and Stuttgart. The police are still investigating the accident.
