Mercedes-Benz Gives CLS Wagon the Green Light

by Mercedes in the News on January 7, 2010

Mercedes-Benz has given the OK to produce a wagon variation of the CLS sedan. The CLS sedan fueled the popular four-door coupe trend, but German competitors were quick to follow. Many of these competitors even have since gone a step further by introducing wagon and hatchback versions of these vehicles. Now Mercedes is moving fast to maintain its edge in this segment

The Mercedes CLS wagon will certainly be a niche vehicle when it arrives in showrooms, but it won’t be without competitors. Sparking the production of the new CLS are vehicles such as the new BMW 5-Series GT as well as the upcoming Audi A7.

Another factor involving this car’s production is cost. Mercedes-Benz is looking for innovative, but cost-effective ways to utilize existing platforms, and therefore expanding upon the existing CLS sedan may be just the beginning. All-new V6 and V8 engines will be used for this new mode and will likely be revealed along with the debut of the S-class coupe this summer. However, Mercedes-Benz Pittsburgh suggests that the wagon will most certainly feature rear-wheel drive along with the possibility of all-wheel drive.

Infusing the lineup with a stylish vehicle like the CLS will go along way with premium car buyers, and no other automaker understands the importance of this than Kia Pittsburgh. Recently, the Korean brand has embarked on building sleeker, sexier models, and that has helped fuel demand even as the economy slowed. Mercedes-Benz Baltimore agrees that while some premium buyers prefer the conservative lines of many MB models, the CLS is truly a standout product that has helped generate impressive sales.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS wagon is scheduled to make its premier in September at the Paris Motor Show but production is not slated to begin until early 2012.
